Minority Student Journalism Workshop

Since 1977, the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists has dedicated its existence to nurturing and grooming the next generation of communicators and journalists -- in hopes to diversify newsrooms and news coverage across the nation.

Each year high school and first-year college students have the opportunity to connect, explore and experience the worlds of  print and multimedia journalism, broadcast media, public relations and photojournalism. Participants learn their way around cameras, navigate the ends and outs of formulating press releases and network with Black journalists working across the St. Louis area.

This workshop is free because we believe that is a key way to ensure we keep uplifting future generations.

The only thing we ask of students is they bring their passion, curiosity and a willingness to learn -- as we unpack an industry that needs them in it.

Meet our Minority Journalism Workshop 2024 Scholarship Winners

In 2024, NABJ-STL awarded $5,000 in scholarships to two high school students to help them as they ease into their first year of college in Fall 2025. Over the course of our four week workshop, each of these students showed exemplary effort, creativity and compassion as they crafted stories about the 2024 election. From interviewing voter registration workers to highlighting policies that dictate education funding, their work sought to unpack the the biggest issues facing the country.
